Questions guests ask before sailing
Everything below is answered from how Aron actually sails. If your question is not here, call or write — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
Do I need sailing experience to join?
No. Two professional crew sail the ship and explain every task. You are invited to help with lines and take the helm, but the work is adapted to the people on board and guests are never responsible for the ship.
How many guests can Aron take?
Aron is approved for up to twelve guests under sail. The number of available places is shown on each SejlPlan departure. For private day trips and events alongside the quay, we confirm the safe capacity in the written proposal for your arrangement.
How long is a voyage?
Open sailing holidays last several days; the exact duration is stated with each departure in SejlPlan. Team building, day trips and events alongside the quay are planned directly with you.
Where do voyages start and end?
Aron is homeported in Svendborg on South Funen, and most voyages begin and end there. Individual departures can start from another harbour in the South Funen Archipelago or the Baltic; the departure harbour is always stated with the departure itself.
What is life on board like?
Simple, warm and social. There is a shower and toilet, central heating, daylight and ventilation below deck, a large deck to sit on, a rowing dinghy, a bathing ladder and a barbecue. Meals are eaten together around the saloon table, and everyone helps a little in the galley.
Is Aron suitable for children?
Families are welcome, and Aron has carried children of many ages. Because a working sailing ship has ladders, hatches and moving gear, we ask you to tell us the ages of the children when you enquire so we can plan the voyage and the safety briefing around them.
What should I bring?
Bring soft luggage rather than a hard suitcase. Storage is limited. Pack warm layers, a windproof and waterproof outer jacket, well-fitting shoes (no high heels) and any medication you need. Bed linen and a towel are included.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The skipper decides the route, and the plan follows the wind rather than the other way round. In hard weather we shelter in the archipelago, change destination or stay in harbour. Safety comes before the itinerary, always.
How do I book?
Open departures are booked through SejlPlan, our booking platform. For charters, team building, private events and quayside receptions, write or call us and we will put together a proposal for your group.
Can we charter the whole ship?
Yes. Companies, families, associations and groups of friends can book Aron for their own group. Contact us with your dates, group size and what you would like to do, and we will send a concrete proposal.
Will I get seasick?
The risk is small in the sheltered waters of the South Funen Archipelago. If a planned route may involve waves for several hours, the crew tells guests beforehand. Bring any medication you normally use, and ask us if you are unsure.
Do I need to be physically strong?
No. There are useful jobs on board that do not require raw strength, and tasks are adapted to each guest. You do need enough mobility for steep companionways, thresholds and a deck that moves under your feet; contact the crew before booking if accessibility is a concern.
How do the toilet and shower work?
Aron has a toilet that flushes with seawater and a shower. Only human waste and toilet paper may go into the toilet because everything passes through small pipes and pumps. Hot water is available on board, and the crew also recommends the spacious shore facilities when Aron is in port.
Is there heating below deck?
Yes. Central heating supplies fresh warm air to the cabins in cool weather, and the accommodation has daylight and ventilation. In warmer weather, fresh night air can circulate through the cabins.
Do we sail at night?
Night sailing is assessed for each voyage by the crew according to the route, weather and crew plan. Ask Helene or Gorm about the specific departure.
